Pedaling towards parity: the importance of strengthening the presence of women in the Cycling Industry.

In the dynamic sector of micromobility, increasing female representation is crucial to overcoming systemic barriers and encouraging equity. It is vital to promote the integration and enhancement of women in leadership and development positions. Recent debates at the Velo City 2024 show, in particular the "Women in Cycling: Bring diversity to the bike sector" conference, have highlighted this issue, underlining the importance of diversifying viewpoints in the industry.

Caroline VAN RENTERGHEM, Representative of the Association Les Roues Libres and Public Affairs Director for Fifteen, expressed the crucial importance of increasing the visibility of women in the cycling industry. In her opinion, such visibility would not only result in better female representation, but also in increased career opportunities, encouraging more women to apply. She also pointed out that since 85% of single-parent families are headed by women, they often face obstacles such as a lack of confidence or information, which restrict their access to leadership roles.

Itsi ALVEANO, BMN LATAM Coordinator at BYCS, highlighted a lack of cultural representation among women in the industry, including particular challenges for Afro, Latina and Asian women. Initiatives such as those seen in Mexico, where associations teach young girls to ride bicycles, are vital responses to these gaps in representation that transcend gender.

These barriers reflect not just a numerical disparity, but also deep-seated structural and cultural barriers to women's access to influential roles. These challenges affect fundamental aspects of the industry, such as safety, product design and corporate policies, thereby altering the overall user experience.

To reverse this trend, it is crucial to develop policies that promote the visibility and employment of women at all levels of the cycling industry. Adopting support and mentoring networks for women and encouraging companies to adopt inclusive practices are important steps towards solving these problems.

Improving the presence of women can only stimulate innovation and improve the economic performance of companies by responding more effectively to the needs of a diverse public.

Investing in gender diversity is therefore not only a moral imperative but also a beneficial long-term strategy for the cycling industry.
