2019 was the beginning of the partnership between

Mobi by Shaw Go and Qucit !

Since its launch in June 2016, the Vancouver bike share system (200+ stations), Mobi By Shaw Go, has been operated by Vancouver Bike Share, Inc. (a subsidiary of Cyclehop).

Over the past few years, the Mobi by Shaw Go system has been expanding, with new stations being added regularly and the number of users increasing. A real challenge for the operation of the system!

Solution

An Intuitive software based on Artificial Intelligence

Since March 2019, Mobi by Shaw Go has been using Qucit Bike to improve its operations. Qucit Bike consists of:

  • An intuitive mobile application for balancers that optimizes routes and tasks to be performed in real time;

  • A dashboard for the operations manager that allows him to track key productivity indicators, key system performance metrics and simplify the management of the field teams.

Results

Operational gains thanks to the optimization of operators' and technicians' routes in the field while improving service. Result: a sustainable service and a reduced carbon footprint! As a result of changes made to optimize rebalancing, Vancouver Bike Share achieved significant operational gains (vs. last year) in key rebalancing KPIs.

▶ What are Mobi's rebalancing objectives in Vancouver?

“Our objective is to ensure that bikes are available to users when and where they are needed by our members. We want to ensure that for every bike that we move, we move it to a location where it most needed and to do so in a way that is as efficient as possible.”

What is Qucit Bike used for?

“Qucit Bike is a tool that allows our balancers to make smart balancing decisions based on current and expected future demand at stations. This ensures that every bike movement is an effective movement of that bike, redistributing it to where it is needed most, and taking into account current AND future demand for bikes.”

▶ How do you use Qucit Bike on a daily basis?

“The balancers are able to use the Qucit Bike app to self-select priority rebalancing operations without the coordination of a central dispatcher. The backend of Qucit Bike allows our Duty Managers to passively monitor the operations of our Balancers and also provides a wide range of analytics that help us to plan and manage our system and crew effectively.”

▶ What are the benefits for you?

“Qucit Bike has allowed us to significantly increase the efficiency of our Balancing crew. With Qucit Bike, we are moving more bikes per staff hour, decreasing our vehicle kms driven (and therefore our environmental footprint), and ensuring that bikes are moved to where they are needed most.

Qucit Bike has allowed us to meet the increased demand on our system as ridership has increased without having to invest in more rebalancing vehicles or significantly expanding our team.

Qucit Bike is also a tool that has improved the job satisfaction of our crew by making it easier for them to make effective balancing decisions. It has made the process of onboarding new crew members easier. We have also benefited from the system analytics that are part of the backend dashboard.”
