Velo-City 2021, Lisbon (Portugal) : "Cycle Diversity"

Early september, Qucit’s team went to Lisbon (Portugal) to attend the Velo-City 2021 conference.

Velo-city is widely considered as the premier worldwide annual cycling summit, serving as a global knowledge exchange platform. It brings together all those who are involved in the policy, promotion and provision for cycling, active mobility and sustainable urban development. After an inspiring Velo-city 2019 conference in Dublin, Lisbon hosted the Velo-city 2021 edition. The global cycling summit took place from the 6 to the 9 of September 2021 and explored the theme "Cycle Diversity".

For Qucit, the Velo-City conference was the opportunity :

  • To take part in the competition of the Smart Pedal Pitch, organized by the CIE

Some key points of the conference

Cargo Bikes

As pointed out in the article of the Cycling Industries Europe, for many in the cycling industry, 2021 has been labelled the year of the cargo bike. Velo-City 2021 highlighted this trend by dedicating several conferences to this topic.

Indeed, as an alternative to the use of the car, the cargo bike appears as an ecological, healthy and useful means of transport to reduce road traffic in city centres.Through its Véligo Location service, Île de France Mobilités offers to rent conventional electrically assisted bicycles as well as electrically assisted cargo bikes.

Some information on the profile of users of Véligo Location electric cargo bikes:

  • A strong success in highly urban areas (Paris and the inner suburbs)

  • Women are slightly more likely to use this service (50.9% of users are women)

  • Users are between 31 and 40 years old.

Fancy Women Bike Ride

The conference Designing gender inclusive cities held on the 9th September had looked into different initiatives and campaigns that try to address the discrepancies in numbers between women and men cyclists and show the way towards more gender-inclusive cities. A really interesting women cycling event has been introduced by Pinar Pinzutti, cycling brainwasher at Bikenomist : the Fancy Women Bike Ride.

Fancy Women Bike Ride is an annual ride of women reclaiming the streets to celebrate the freedom of cycling. The event is held every year on World Car Free Day. It is a short ride and has a dress code: "Fancy". Since 2013, the movement has become more and more popular around the world. In 2021, Fancy Women Bike Ride has been hosted in more than 150 cities worldwide on September 19th.
