Rebalancing is one of the most important - and challenging - jobs of any bikeshare operator. The term “rebalancing” refers to the dynamic distribution of bikes from stations full (or close to capacity) of bikes to those that are empty (or close to empty). With the right rebalancing strategy and resources in place, a mobility operator can come as close as possible to ensuring a bike or dock is available for customer use at any time of day, leading to greater user satisfaction and operational efficiency. Lean more about how we partnered with Shift Transit, Canada's leading mobility operator, to optimize their Bike Share Toronto rebalancing strategy with our solution, Qucit Bike.

Solution

An intuitive software based on Artificial Intelligence

Since January 2020, Shift Transit has used the Qucit Bike software stack to improve its operational efficiency. Qucit Bike consists of:

  • An intuitive mobile application for rebalancers that optimizes routes and tasks to be performed in real time;

  • A  dashboard for the Operations Manager that allows them to track key productivity indicators, key system performance metrics and simplify the management of field agents.

Results

Significant rebalancing gains, leading to greater bike/dock availability for users and record-breaking system usage. With changes made to optimize rebalancing, Shift Transit has delivered significant Y-o-Y gains in the most important rebalancing KPIs for the Bike Share Toronto program.

Monica Wejman testimony

General Manager, Bike Share Toronto at Shift Transit

“Today, Bike Share Toronto is one of the largest and most successful bike sharing systems in North America. To help build on our operational capabilities, Shift Transit sought a technology solution that would better manage and optimize field tasks, while scaling overall operations, improve system bike and dock rebalancing, and reduce operational costs.

With the implementation of Qucit Bike, our operations are optimized for vehicle mileage, gas consumption, and labour costs.[...]As a result of our partnership, we’ve seen very strong Y-o-Y improvements in availability shortages (full & empty stations). We  also have the ability to get granular details on team member output, which allows us to improve our approach to employee coaching & training.”
